American Heroes.

It’s not every week that two famous Armstrongs feature so prominently in the news. For a cycling fan who also watched the first moon landing as a schoolboy, the stories of Neil and Lance have made an interesting contrast. One a modest hero of the space race who played the iconic leading role in one of the most compelling human dramas of this or any other era. The other a massively complex and flawed character with a straight-out-of-Hollywood backstory who, for all his faults, was the predominant cyclist of his – largely discredited – generation and a massive philanthropist to boot.

Two heroes: one departed to a universal chorus of tributes; the other fallen, emphatically, from grace.
